Working In Cell Edit Mode In Excel 2007

One enters information into an Excel worksheet by modifying the cells within that sheet. The process is the same regardless of whether you are entering information into empty cells or cells that already contain data. If you wish to enter information into an empty cell, simply activate the cell and then begin typing. When you do so, the formula bar becomes activated and two icons appeared to the left of the formula bar.

When you finish typing, you can do one of two things: you can either cancel, to abandon the changes you’ve made to the cell; or you can enter, to confirm the changes you’ve made. If you wish to cancel, either click on the cancel button on the left of the formula bar or press the escape key on your keyboard. If you wish to confirm your changes, you can either click on the Enter button to the left of the formula bar or press the Enter key on your keyboard.

The action of pressing the Enter key does two things: it confirms your data entry and, also, moves you down one cell. This is usually pretty convenient. However Excel allows you to decide what happens when you press the Enter key. To specify this, click on the Office button and choose Excel options. On the left of the dialog box, click on the advanced button. This will display “Editing Options”. The first Editing Option reads “After pressing enter move selection” and allows you to choose the direction in which you move whenever you press the Enter key.

As well as choosing “down”, “right”, “up” or “left”, you also have the option of completely deactivating the movement. This means that, whenever you make an entry and press the Enter key, the information is entered into the cell but the cell remains active: you don’t move down.

If you want to enter data into several cells, Excel allows you to highlight a range of cells and then to navigate between the highlighted cells, entering information as you move. For example, if you are filling out an invoice, you can select a matrix of cells under the “quantity”, “description” and “unit price” columns. After you’ve entered the quantity, you can then press the Tab key on the keyboard to move to the “description” column. You then press Tab again to move the “price” column, and so on.

When you reach the last column of the highlighted matrix of cells, pressing Tab moves us to the second highlighted row. Whey you reach the bottom right of the selection, if you continue to press Tab, you move back to the top left once more. Excel even allows you to move backward by pressing Shift and Tab.

As an alternative to moving right and then down, you can move down first and then to the right. To do this, press the Enter key instead of the Tab key. Pressing Shift and Enter allows you to move in reverse: up and then to the left.

There are two ways of entering information into cells that already contain information. The first is simply to activate the cell, type a new value and then press the Enter key. The second is to modify the current value of the cell. To do this, you can either double-click on the cell and edit the cell directly; or you can highlight the cell and then make your changes in the formula bar.

Editing The Head Content Using Dreamweaver CS5′s Visual Tools

A web page has two main areas: the head element and the body element. The body element contains all of the visible content which will be displayed in the browser window. The head element, by contrast, is designed to contain information about the web page; meta information as it is sometimes called. In this article, we will look at the different ways in which Dreamweaver allows users to modify elements within the head of a web page. Let’s start with the title.

The title element is meant to contain a broad description of the content of the page. It is extremely important that each page should have a title element and that the title be pertinent to that page. Dreamweaver automatically adds a title element to every new page with the default text “Untitled Document”. Perhaps the easiest way of modifying this default title is simply to enter a new title in the Document Title box of the Document toolbar which is normally displayed at the top of the page. An alternative method is the choose Modify – Page Properties and then click on the Title/Encoding category on the left of the screen.

The title element is the only element which is syntactically required to be placed within the head element. In addition a number of optional meta elements may be placed in the head element to provide further information about the current page. One such meta element is created automatically by Dreamweaver along with the title: the content-type. This declares the character encoding to the browser and is particularly important if you have a site with an international audience. To specify the character encoding, choose Modify – Page Properties, click on the Title/Encoding category on the left of the screen and then choose an option from the Encoding drop-down menu.

The meta description element is also very important since, along with the page title, it is often displayed when your page shows up in the search engine results. The description should consist of one or two sentences summarising the content of the page. To set the description in Dreamweaver, choose Insert – HTML – Head Tags – Description then enter a brief description in the dialogue box which appears.

There are a lot of other meta tags which can be added inside the head element. However, let’s just mention one more: keywords. The keywords meta element should contain a list of the important phrases and words which occur on the current page. Only text that actually appears on the page should figure in the keywords. To create the keywords meta tag in Dreamweaver, choose Insert – HTML – Head Tags – Keywords.
